LISBON.
A teacher at the Basic School 2/3 Roque Gameiro, in Amadora, is infected with coronavirus. According to a statement from the school, six classes were suspended: one from the Amadora Secondary School and another five from the Basic School 2/3 Roque Gameiro.
Students will be in social isolation, in their homes, until March 13, as well as teachers and operational assistants who have been in contact with the teacher. Other students’ classes will run smoothly.
“Teachers and operational assistants who have been in contact with this teacher are also in a situation of isolation,” the statement said.
In the same statement, the Grouping of Pioneering Schools of Portuguese Aviation, in which the Basic School 2/3 Roque Gameiro and Escola Secundária da Amadora belongs, says that a teacher was on vacation in Milan, Italy, last week, and returned to school to teach at the end of last week.
According to the group, last Monday he no longer attended school and on Wednesday he was diagnosed with Covid-19.
“In view of this situation, it was determined by the health authority of Amadora that the five classes of the Basic School 2/3 Roque Gameiro and a class from the Amadora Secondary School that had classes with this teacher will remain in social isolation until the 13th of March, even, in their homes, therefore not being able to come to school “, says the statement.
The school stresses that, “although young people in this age group are not very susceptible to becoming ill with this situation”, it is requested to pay attention to “the appearance of symptoms, such as” fever or cough or sore throat “.
According to the school, the families of these students will be contacted daily to check the evolution of the clinical situation.
“The rest of the school community may be calm, since there was no contact with this teacher on the part of other students”, the note says.
The Director-General of Health confirmed that the teacher, who teaches Physics-Chemistry, is admitted to Hospital Curry Cabral.
“Last night the health delegate contacted the patient’s relatives who contacted the school,” said Graça Freitas.
In Portugal, there are nine infected people: six in Porto, two in Lisbon and one in Coimbra.
The new coronavirus, which appeared in Wuhan, China, at the end of last year, can cause respiratory infections like pneumonia and has already killed about 3,300 people and infected more than 95,000 in 79 countries.
