40,000 cigarettes seized at at Lisbon airport amounting tax fraud of more than € 7,800.

About 40,000 cigarettes from Russia were seized and two 32-year-old women were arrested for smuggling at Lisbon’s Humberto Delgado airport.

The Republican National Guard (GNR) has seized about 40,000 cigarettes from Russia and detained two women at Lisbon’s Humberto Delgado airport for the crime of smuggling.

If cigarettes had been released for consumption, this would amount to a “tax fraud of more than € 7,800 .

The Guard says that the Tax Action Unit, through the Lisbon Tax Action Detachment, detained on Monday two 32-year-old women for the crime of tobacco smuggling at Lisbon Airport.

“In the course of a cargo control action on the airport accesses, the military approached the two women who engaged in suspicious behavior in the presence of the GNR,” he said.

According to the GNR, during the approach, the military found that the women’s luggage was concealed with Russian tax-stamped tobacco packs.

The detained women were accused and the facts forwarded to the Lisbon Court of Justice.
