The Higher School of Technology and Management (ESTG) of the Polytechnic of Porto closed this Monday for an indefinite period “all facilities where classes take place” in the center of Felgueiras and in Lousada, but also in Amarante and Penafiel, district of Porto.
“These measures condition the activity of about 1,800 people, including students, teaching and non-teaching staff, with the suspension of the teaching activity of 21 courses”, adds the institution, in a statement.
ESTG clarifies that the closure “of all places where teaching activities exist” was considered “prudent” after the Directorate-General for Health (DGS) announced the closure of all basic, preparatory and secondary schools in Felgueiras and Lousada “.
Closed locations include “Campus 3 of the Polytechnic of Porto, in the center of Felgueiras” and the facilities of the Higher Professional Technical Courses, located in the cities of Amarante, Felgueiras, Lousada and Penafiel.
Due to the Covid-19 outbreak, in Felgueiras and Lousada, gyms, libraries, swimming pools and cinemas were closed, in addition to all schools.
Residents in those two municipalities in the district of Porto were advised to avoid unnecessary travel.
Portugal registers 31 confirmed cases of infection, the most recent confirmed this morning .
All those infected, 18 men and 12 women, are hospitalized.
DGS also reported that 447 people are under surveillance for contacts with infected people.
In view of the increase in cases, the Government ordered the temporary suspension of visits to hospitals, homes and prisons in the North.
Some secondary and university education establishments in the North were also closed, as well as two schools in Amadora and one in Portimão.
The Covid-19 epidemic was detected in December in China and has already claimed more than 3,800 deaths.
About 110,000 people have been infected in more than a hundred countries, and more than 62,000 have recovered.
In recent days, Italy has become the most serious case of an epidemic outside China, with 366 dead and more than 7,300 infected by the new coronavirus, which can cause respiratory infections like pneumonia.
To try to stem the epidemic, the government of Rome has quarantined some 16 million people in the north of the country, affecting cities like Milan, Venice or Parma.
