Volunteers collect 19 tons of marine litter off the Portuguese Coast

About 19 tons of marine litter were collected during the week commemorating the International Coastal Cleaning Day, which featured more than 170 cleaning actions.

In a statement, the Oceano Azul Foundation says that the 70 cleaning actions, which involved 1250 people, cleaned up 130 km of Portuguese coast and collected 19 tons of garbage.

The approximately 19 tons of garbage were collected in underwater actions and along the Portuguese coast.

Eleven of these cleaning actions took place today in Sesimbra, in the Luís Saldanha Marine Park, and brought together more than 200 volunteer amateur divers. Including the Minister of the Sea, Ricardo Serrão Santos, who also collected marine waste.

Today’s actions allowed the collection of several kilograms of garbage that was deposited on board the ship Santa Maria Manuela and that will be counted at the end of the day.

International Coastal Cleaning Day, always on the third Saturday in September, was created by the Ocean Conservancy organization and is designed to promote the protection of the oceans, and is currently celebrated in more than 100 countries, bringing together millions of volunteers in coastal cleaning.

According to the Foundation, in 2019, 13 tons of marine litter were collected in 65 coastal cleaning actions, which involved more than 2,300 volunteers and 100 organizations, having cleaned more than 80 kilometers of the Portuguese coast.
